EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) is an evidenced-based approach that uses bilateral stimulation to help desensitize trauma memories or triggers. This type of therapy has been proven to “help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression and panic disorders,” according to the EMDR International Association. EMDR differs from talk therapy in that it does not require you to talk extensively about the traumatic events, but rather focuses on changing the thoughts, feelings or behaviors resulting from the distressing issue, and it can be completed in fewer sessions that other psychotherapies. EMDR can be conducted through virtual sessions. I am trained in EMDR and currently pursuing additional training and consultation for EMDR certification, which is recognized through EMDR’s International Association (EMDRIA). I am also trained in EMDR Flash, which is a short-term evidence-based technique that is very effective in dealing with phobias, fears, and single-incident traumas. EMDR Flash may also be used in conjunction with EMDR and other approaches.

I enjoy working with parents who may be struggling with family conflicts (divorce) or a child’s mental health or behavioral issues (depression, ADHD, developmental issues) that may be impacting their relationship with their child. These sessions will focus on behavioral strategies, psychoeducation about mental health issues, building better communication skills and support around managing the stress of parenthood.

Clinical supervision is a vital part of growing as a clinician and it is important to have a mentor in the field. In supervision sessions we may discuss theory, clinical cases, process transference/countertransference, and how to manage self-care to prevent burnout or vicarious trauma. I am a board-approved supervisor in the state of Maryland.
